Balanced Score Card: Continous focus on improving the business!

Both profit and non profit organisations need to focus on improved services, reduced costs and flexibility towards the market. Despite this, most organisations still make use of inappropriate management reports that are usually lacking the necessary vital information.
Usually, financial figures form the attention area and other performance factors are ignored. This approach is not fit for the future and is also not related to the strategic goals of an organisation. The Balanced Score Card (BSC) - a simple and logical management tool– focuses on 4 perspectives that helps one to measure the performance of an organisation. These are: the financial perspective, the customer perspective, the internal perspective and the innovation and learning perspective. The departure point is to determine the objectives and measuring the performance, after which necessary course corrections can be made. 
The BSC can be used to: 

  1. Translate the strategy into operational targets for short term plans; 
  2. Generate appropriate management reports;
  3. Highlight and help resolve the discrepancies between the strategic objectives and the actual results.
